Museum seeks member of Whiting Race Family:
SENECA FALLS - The Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry is looking for descendants of Whiting Race, who was the mayor (then called president) of Seneca Falls in 1848.The museum will be having an important event later in the fall and would like a descendent of the family to attend.
The museum has done research working with the Seneca County Historian, Walt Gable, about Whiting Race's family.They know Race was born in Catskill on April 7, 1802, and died on Dec. 12, 1870.Race was a lumber dealer who later had his business at 37 Fall St., and resided with his family at 25 Cayuga St.
Race married Rebecca, who was born in Maine in 1807.Their children were Helen, who married William D. Lee on Feb. 3, 1856, in the Trinity Church in Seneca Falls; Carlton, who became sailor and married Lizzie V. Thorn on April 7, 1869; Milton, who married Mary Schuyler, who was born in Seneca Falls on Nov. 9, 1865; Stanley, who became a clerk; and William, who was a blacksmith and married Susan.They had a son named William, who married Bridget and together had two sons, Edward and John.William died in Rochester.
