I am a descendant of Allen Hyram Rackley.Recently, I have decided to re-research my Rackley line as I have not visited this research in over 4 years, and left it sort of "hanging" in limbo. When I went back to see what new "stuff" was out there for Allen Hyram Rackley and his descendants, I noticed there seems to be much confusion.Much more than there was 4 years ago!
I am hoping that we can clear up some of this confusion by sharing and working together. From what I've gathered, the main sources of information for Allen are: (and please correct and edit me in your responses, as you see fit....)
The book, "RACKLEY: A southern colonial family" by Potter and Rackley, 1984. -
States Allen H. Rackley's parents were Shadrick and Martha Rackley. This contradicts other information that claims his parents were Robert Mills and Rebecca (MNU) Rackley.Other than Genforum, I cannot find a source for the latter information.
1820 Franklin Co., TN census -
Does anyone have his family enumeration written down anywhere?
Morgan Co., AL marriages to 1825 -
Rackley, Allen H.Dean, Polly Garner9 Jun 1825
Rackley, William H.Smith, Nancy1 Sep 1825
The book, "History of Pope Co., AR, Vol. I" (pg. 436) from the Pope Co. Historical Association. -
Daughter of Allen Hyram Rackley (Elizabeth), marries James Stout in 1828 in Blount Co., AL, has several children with him in Blount Co., AL, then moves to Pope Co., AR in 1843 with other Stout families. It is notable to mention a HUGE misconception/mix-up here. There happens to be one "Hiram Rackley" living in Pope Co., AR in the mid-1800's.He is a son of Frederick and Barberry Rackley of Lawrence Co., TN, b. 1810.Hiram and his brother William move to Pope Co. AR abt. 1854.(Somehow, Rackley researchers have connected Elizabeth (Rackley) Stout to this "Hiram Rackley" family......and it is a mistake! You can see this information spreading at Worldconnect Project at Rootsweb, as people share wrong information.
1830 Blount Co., AL census -
Both Allen's family and son William's family are enumerated in this census.Does anyone have this enumeration written down?
Can anyone check to see if James and Elizabeth (Rackley) Stout are enumerated anywhere nearby?Just to confirm location? They should still be there until 1843.
1840 Blount co., AL census -
Allen Rackley is enumerated in this census, the household consists of:
1 male age 20-30(son Michael Rufus?)
1 male age 50-60(Allen H.)
1 female age 30-40.(2nd wife Polly Garner Dean?)
IS WILLIAM NOT FOUND IN THIS CENSUS AS WELL?IF NOT, COULD HE ALREADY BE IN WINSTON CO, AL BY NOW?
Also, could someone check for Elizabeth (Rackley) Stout's family again......should still be around for 3 more years.
1850 Blount Co., AL census -
Elizabeth (Rackley) Stout has moved to Pope Co., AR by this time, but where is William RAckley's family?
1860 Winston Co., AL census -
Both Allen and William are enumerated in this census.Does anyone have their enumeration written down anywhere?Allen would have to be in his 80's!(Good for him!)
I'd like to raise some questions for discussion at this point.
1. Which source should we trust as to who the parents of Allen Hyram Rackley are?Does anyone remember if the book listed Allen's full name?
2. There are 2 places of birth listed for Elizabeth (Rackley) Stout, those being KY and NC.According to the book, "History of Pope Co., AR, Vol. I", and to my own family records, she was born in NC.Her husband, James Stout, was born in KY.
3.There are 2 birthdates floating around for Michael Rufus Rackley, those being 1812 and Feb. 1816.The source for the 1812 birthdate come from the 1850 Blount Co., AL census, however I am not sure where the 1816 date comes from.
4.There are some that claim that Allen Hyram Rackley died in 1851 in AL.I assume this source is from the RACKLEY book? However, if both Allen and William are found in the 1860 Winston Co., AL census, Allen had to have died after 1860.
5.The second marriage to Polly Dean DOES fit with the migration pattern of Allen H. Rackley.Winston Co., Blount Co., Cullman Co., and Morgan Co., AL are adjacent to each other and seem to be where the family is concentrated.I mention Cullman Co., because that is where Elizabeth's future husband, James Stout, is also known to have lived. This county is sandwiched between Morgan Co., AL and Blount Co., AL.
6.Only because I question some things above, do I wonder about Allen's involvement in the West Tennessee Militia. The source of that information also comes from the RACKLEY book.Really, I see no other reason to question it.I'd like to see the record for myself of course, but it does seem feasible since Michael was born in TN.
I am trying to sort through the inconsistencies, but I am just in the beginning stages.
I hope we can all benefit from a little organization!
I have a word document that shows the known and speculated migration pattern of this family.I'd be happy to share it with anyone interested!Remember, however, it is only in it's beginning stages.
Thanks to you all!
