My only source is Helen Burgess whose work has not been challenged to my knowledge.Birth records at that early time are hard to come by without a family Bible.Burgess lists John, Francis, Beverly, Susan, Polly, Elizabeth, Daniel, Feathergail (Feathergale), Joseph, Margaret and Richard as children of Benjamin RADCLIFF (1790-1849) and Polly BROWN (1794-1838).Benjamin's 2nd wife is believed to have been a Margaret Unknown.
The John you seek was m. to Mary CATHCART (1828-1895).Their children include Dora Belle, J. Robert, Wesley, Bill. Lydia, Daniel and Jane.
Benjamin was b. 1790 in Garrard Co., KY, son of Richard RADCLIFF, son of Daniel Stephen RADCLIFF of Hampshire Co., (W)VA.
The records compiled by Helen Burgess were from records sent to Clara Marie Burns from Mrs. A. Dean Sumner from information gleaned from Old Unity Church and Shanks Abstract Office, Salem, Indiana ca. 1968.
I tend to trust this work done on an old manual typewriter in pre-computer days. People tended to verify data then rather than accept anything that appears on a computer page as happens these days. There were few guarantees even then but I think you can accept the above results without too much doubt.
We have accepted old Daniel Stephen RADCLIFF as the progenitor of the RADCLIFFs based on a family Bible alone. The Virginia Military district has a letter from a local commander that Daniel Stephen was killed in now Lewis Co., WV in 1784 by two Indians. But no age is given for him. It's likely that the murdered man was a son of Daniel Stephen rather than the old man himself. But where is the evidence? We don't have any yet.If any comes forward I hope it will be posted on this genforum.
