Colin I have quite a comprehensive tree on the family RAMSDEN starting with a Henry Ramsden b 1758. who was the GR-gr-grandfather of the H E Ramsden who was decorated with the VC during the Boer war. Horace Ramsden married 1st. An Ada Tomlinson whom he later divorced, from this marrage he only had 1 sone Malcom. My Uncle Peter who has contributed above in this forum was Malcom's Son, Malcom had Two daughters and Two sons, however 1 son died at about the age of 20. btw I am the son of one of the daugters Pat R. After the divorce Horace married a Mary Levy, whom we assume was widowed when Horace died. All information confirms that they never had children. So it would seem that my uncle Peter is technically the only possible Grandson and his sisters Wendy and Pat are the only grandaughters? There is a reference in recent research on the VC that mentions a third marraige but this is unconfirmed. However it would seem that any Canada or N.Ireland link direct to Horace R is unlikly, and that although the names are the same perhaps they are related through another means? Any thoughts on the matter greatly appreciated. I would be only to happy to mail the tree I have if it would be of interest. mail me on firstname.lastname@example.org. btw Peter R and our family are in South Africa. Where Horace Ramsden V.C. died. The Medal was auctioned in 1999 in SA and fetched SAR500.000. My mother and I attended the auction and I refer you to www.chapter-one.com/vc/award.asp?vc=1018 It is one of the most comprehensive sites dedicated to the VC and is run by a Mike Chapman in the UK.
