I happened upon this forum whilst trying to find a link between Jesse Ramsden and Hildebrand Ramsden. I have recently acquired a first edition (1854) of "The Microscope" by Jabez Hogg which came from the library of Hildebrand Ramsden of Walthamstow in Essex. This immediately piqued my interest because of the famous Ramsden microscope eyepiece invented by Jesse Ramsden (1735-1800).
Elsewhere on this forum, a thread on the Cuban Ramsdens seems to make a link to Wathamstow, and hence Hildebrand. In the same thread I saw mention of one Frederick Wollaston Ramsden (1839-1898) and have to wonder if that name was in honour of William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828) who also made significant contributions to optics and would have almost certainly been known to Jesse Ramsden.
I would be fascinated to learn if there is any real connection between these three.
