Otto was born, 5 Dec 1881, son of Sylfast P. Ramstad and Marit Hoven.Sylfast was farmer and horse dealer who spent his whole life in the area where Otto was born.Marit Hoven was of a wealthy agricultural family.Their children were: Peter, Olaf, Gudbrund, Sylfest, Anna, Mathias, Hans, Leo and Otto.All these became citizens of the US except Sylfest and Hans who were farmers in Norway.Sylfest became owner of the Ramstad estate that had been in the family for six hundred years.
Olaf came to the US in 1882 and became a successful merchant and banker. Peter was a prosperous farmer and died at Ada, MN, in 1918. Gudbrund was an early settler of Elkhorn, MT, for a number of years was employed at the smelter at Butte, and after his health failed he returned to Norway and died at the old home in 1895.Anna (Mrs. E.G. Otto was next to last to immigrate to the US and he never saw his parents again after he left them in 1895.Otto came alone at the age of 12 years with the address of his destination attached to the label of his coat. His destination was Ada, MN, where he joined his brothers on a farm.He attended public schools, acquired English, and became qualified to teach in rural schools.He attended Minnesota State Normal School, at Moorhead, graduating in 1909. then entering the University of Minnesota where he received a bachelor's degree in 1912.For the following three years he was supt of schools at Clinton.
Otto gave up schoolwork to come to Poplar, MT, 4 Sep 1915, where he took charge of the Fort Peck State Bank.
On 15 Apr 1916, Minneapolis, MN, Otto married Miss Otilia Ellertson, born 25 Dec 1889, at Mayville, ND.She was the daughter of E.E. and Julia (Husebye) Ellertson.Otto and Otilia Ramstad had the following children: Paul Ellertson, b. 30 Jan 1918; Ralph Lincoln, b. 15 Sep 1919.
