I don't know if this will be of help to you at all, but . . .There was a Rather family in Wisconsin, a Charles William Rather - whose name was originally Rathert. He was born 1819 in Rinteln, Germany. His father was Franz Wilhelm Rathert, who died 7 Oct 1876, I don't know where.
