Jane Lula Roulston was born April 30, 1812 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. She is believed to have been the second of three children born to Moses Matthew Roulston and Polly Denny. Her name is often found as Lula Jane.
About 1828 she married Jarred Millsaps. Only three children, a son and two daughters, are recorded from this marriage, and what become of her husband is not known. According to the family's oral history, Jarred got up one morning, went on an errand, and never returned. Seven years later in 1844, Jane had husband Jarred declaired legally dead, and on November 14, 1844, in Soddy, Hamilton County, Tennessee, she entered into her second marriage, taking George Bowers as her husband. Some report this marriage as having taken place in Roane County, Tennessee. Six children are attributed to this union: John B., Fielding, Mary Arvilla, William Allen, Margaret E. and Sarah L.. The family was enumerated during the 1850 census of McMinn County, Tennessee. Living with the couple are children their previous marriages and three children from their marriage.
Jane left McMinn County, perhaps after her husband's death, and by 1870 she lived in Hamilton County, Tennessee, close to her brother William Roulstone. Later she moved to the Daisy area of Hamilton County. Jane died April 10, 1902 at the age of 89 and was buried in the Granny Walker Cemetery in Hamilton County.
