I descend from John and Elizabeth Rafield through their son Charles Rayfield (1822-1891). I must confess, it is my fault that Marshall has been ascribed as Elizabeth's maiden name and am convinced that my guess of many years ago is wrong. Although I do not know her maiden name, a more accurate guess now might be that her maiden name was Strange, a sister to James Timothy Strange of Sumter District, SC.
I think John Rafield of Gaston Co., NC was the son of William Jordan Raffield who ultimately died in Georgia about 1828. Here is why. William Jordan Raffied and John Raffield, Sr. were apparently brothers who came from Ireland in 1764 and lived near one another in Sumter District, SC starting in the 1770s. John Sr died in 1788 and left five children, two sons one named William and the other named John Jr. who died in 1801. This William Raffield was known after 1803 as William Jr.
William Jordan Raffield deeded property to his son William in Sumter in 1803 and stated he was moving. (He then went to Augusta, GA. and his son became William Sr.) The two first cousins by the same name then first married sisters, Sarah and Elizabeth Shorter. I won't go through how you tell them apart right now. Anyway, from the census records in 1790 and 1800, we know William Jordan Raffield had another son who was born about 1784 when our John Rafield of Gaston Co., NC was born. He would have moved away with his father after 1803 as well. Plus, since one brother named two sons John and William, it stands to reason that the other one would have as well.
John and Elizabeth Rafield named their third son Trezevant who in 1860 says he was born in Sumter District in 1814. Pretty strong clue that our John was in Sumter District and since we know his first cousin John died in 1801, it stands to reason he must be the unidentified son of William Jordan Raffield. There is another remote possibility but having studied it for years, and having debated with other Raffield researchers, I am convinced John is the son of William Jordan Raffield (who married Nancy Bagnal by the way who was dead by 1819 when her brother Isaac Bagnal left property to her unnamed children). Please let me know what you think.
