Sylvanus, Nelson and John Blewet Rayfield are strongly believed to be the sons of James Rayfield of Edgefield Co., SC, formerly of Duplin Co., NC. Willis Rayfield may also be related to this family.
James Rayfield is believed to be the son of Southy Rayfield who starts out in Accomack Co., VA, then to Gloucester Co., VA, then Duplin Co., NC and then to Logan Co., KY where he died. Southy is someway the son of John Rayfield, son of William Rayfield who immigrated to Tidewater NC in 1703 from England. Southy also appears to be a descendant of Southy White of Accomack Co., VA.
I am fascinated by the name change. Although not related to my mother's line, Rayfield was her maiden name and I am compiling a substantial book that will include this group in a footnote/sketch. In our branch, the name evolveed from Raphel to Rafield to Raffield to Rayfield, so we have a spelling change but not nearly as drastic as in this family. If anyone can explain this, I would greatly appreciate the story. Thanks.
