This family name is spelled in this country, Reckard, Rickard and record, but all descend from Giles Rickard, an Englishman, who was in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1637, and a large landowner.He was born 1597, died 1684.The Records of Towanda, Pennsylvania, descend from John IV Record and wife Deborah, who settled in Rhode Island.This John was of the fifth generation in this country.
(I) Giles Rickard, of Plymouth, and first wife Judith had children:Giles; John, of whom further: Sarah.
(II) John, son of Giles and Judith Rickard, was born 1625.He married, 1651, Esther Barnes.Children:John, of whom further; Mary; Lydia.
(III) John II, son of John I and Esther (Barnes) Rickard, was born 1675.He and wife Mary had children:John, of whom further:Mercy; John; Esther; James; Elizabeth.
(IV) John III, son of John II and Mary Rickard, was born 1684.His wife Sarah bore him male issue, including a son John, of whom further.
(V) John IV, son of John III and Sarah Rickard, settled in Rhode Island.He spelled the name Record.He had by wife Deborah:Whitman, Daniel, Thomas, John, of whom further.
(VI) John V, also called John Jr., son of John IV and Deborah Record, was born in Rhode Island about 1750, settled in Dutchess county, New York.The old family Bible record states that: “John Jr. and Mary Donwell were married in South Kingstown in the county of Kings and colony of Rhode Island the 14th day of October 1773.The same Bible has these lines written therein:
John Record junior is my name
and English is my nation
Poughkeepsie is my dwelling place
And Christ is my Salvation.
