Josiah was my GrGrgrandfather.John was a son. Josiah was killed, apparently by John Holland, because the son John shot the man who shot his father. The family story says that "the boys were chased into Oklahoma by the men that shot their dad. Then they came back and shot the men that shot their dad." I am really surprised that John was the one that did it, because he was only 15 yrs old when his dad was killed. But two of the older boys, Sylvester and Frank, were in the Texas Calvery. If you have a copy of the diary, was a brother named Jacob involved ? He seems to have disappeared after the 1860 census.Incidently, Josiah was killed in 1862 "over something political". That's the best my grandmother could remember.
In 1869, John and his brother Silas, were hanged by vigilantes. The younger brother Otis was also there, but he escaped. It is believed to be revenge for the death of the man that shot their father.
In the 1870 census, the mother Lavina, Otis, and the sister Hester Ann are with my Grgrandfather Frank in Carroll county AR.
I would like to have a copy of the diary that tells of the murder of John Holland. Mot all of it, just that part.If you need more info, email me and I'll do what I can.
