Yes, my ancestor Thomas Love (or Lelove) Redmond, who was listed as non-white in the 1840 census, changed his name or had it changed for him, from Redman. I will go through the Redmond/Redman hardcopy I have over the weekend I hope, and will try to get some facts sorted and posted here.
Many prominent Cherokees like John Ross and Sequoyah were descended from Scots-Irish frontier traders.
