Dear Susan
I live in the UK - I don't think any of the Redners you talk about are my relatives - but you may be interested to know that REDNER is definitely a north German surname. My family came from Memel in East Prussia which formed part of Germany post unification in 1871.Since 1945 that town is in Lithuania: all the Germans were expelled after the end of World War II by the Russians.
I think it very unlikely that anyone called REDNER came from Ireland.I've never heard of German people emigrating there - historically, the country was always too poor to support even its own population. That's why so many Irish emigrated to the USA, particularly after the 1880's potato famine.
For those of you who don't speak German - REDNER is the German word for 'orator' or 'speaker'.It's not a particularly common German surname, and its unknown in England - I know for certain I am the only surviving family member here with that surname.
Hope this is of some interest to you.One of my ancesters emigrated to USA from Germany - sometime around 1860 I believe, but I haven't been able to trace him.
Regards,
Karen
