10/18/01: After reading the microfilmed minutes of Long Creek Baptist Church (found in the Mercer Univ. archives), I would like to add some information to my previous posting.
Mary Renfroe Hancock, wife of Clement Hancock, Sr and daughter of Enoch and Rachael Renfroe, joined the church of Long Creek on June 26, 1802. She was dismissed by letter on 21st April 1810.
In February of 1810, Major John Hatcher and his wife Mary Brady Hatcher, had applied for letters of dismissal from Long Creek Church. There had been close ties between the Hatcher and Hancock families for several generations.
On March 24th, 1810, the minutes of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church of Wilkinson Co., Ga. record that "Brother John Hatcher and Sister Mary Hatcher was rec'd by letter."
The list of female members of the Mt. Nebo minutes record that "Mary Hancock, Deceased 28th May 1817."
There is evidence in the tax and census records of Wilkinson County, GA that indicates that Clement and Mary Hancock's family were in that county until after 1820.The 1820 Wilkinson County Census lists the following sons of Clement and Mary Hancock: Clemmont Hancock (m. Temperance Jackson) Joseph Hancock (m. Mary Brady, d/o Samuel, believed to be the brother of Mary Brady Hatcher) William Hancock (m. Nancy Hatcher, d/o Major John and Mary Brady Hatcher) John Hancock (m. Ellen Jackson, sister of Temperance)
