I am looking for any information anyone may have on my great grandfather, ROBERT RENNIE BARRIE, who was born 1891 in Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland. I am not sure of his connection to the Rennie's but have noted from my research that Rennie is a common family name in Kilsyth. I read that it was sometimes a practise in times gone by to name a child by the maiden name of its mother, thus carrying on the names of both parents. This is only a guess but I thought it coincidental that his birth place and unusual middle name are seemingly related. My information on the Barrie family is as follows:
ROBERT BARRIE was born in Scotland, birth date unknown. He worked as a small independent coal mining contractor in Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland. He married unknown (speculatively a RENNIE). They had nine children:
ROBERT RENNIE BARRIE (born 1891) CHARLES BARRIE JAMES BARRIE JOHN BARRIE MAGGIE (?) BARRIE BELLA BARRIE TINA (?) BARRIE ELLA BARRIE BESSIE/ELIZABETH BARRIE
ROBERT RENNIE BARRIE was born 1891, in Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland. He emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1912, originally with the intention of farming in the west of the county, but ultimately obtaining employment as a coal deliverer in Toronto.
ROBERT RENNIE BARRIE married MARGARET ALICE RUDDOCK in 1916 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They had one known child, my grandfather ROBERT JOHN BARRIE, born 30 September, 1917.
If anyone is familiar with this family or can think of any possible connection to the Rennie families of Kilsyth, please let me know. Any information in this regard would be most appreciated.
