I am sorry to have been so long in replying but asusual I could not find the material I needed.
I suspect that you may be right that there is no connection between the South African and Pacific Rex families. I have been basing my assumption of a connection on 'non-solid' eveidence, namely a newspaper report concerning the All Black rugby player Frank Bunce.
In an article in the Wellington 'Dominion' dated 25 June 1997 it is stated:
"Palace not amused by Bunce's 'blue blood'"
--- Both Bunce and his late great-uncle, long time Niue Premier Sir Robert Rex, were aware of reports that they had blue blood running back to George Rex and therefore the British Royal family. ____
Another member of the Rex family, Pastor Stan Rex of Auckland said King George's marriage to Hannah Lightfoot produced three sons - George, John and Henry.
The story goes that the mother and the children were banished to South Africa and given large sums of money to keep quiet. Erased from royal histories, the family was given the name Rex, which is Latin for king.
George stayed in South Africa, Henry went to Utah and John headed to Australia where he became an early Governor General.
Robert Rex, the son of Sir Robert, said his father, who died in 1992,never talked about his lineage. His father's books and documents relating to the Rex family were treated as 'sacred'.
Daughter Pauline Rex, studying in Auckland, is one of 300 to 400 descendants of George Rex living in New Zealand.
Bunce, a former rubbish collector turned professional rugby player, said he first heard of the link when he toured South Africa with the All Blacks in 1992.
"An uncle or cousin there told me that I was a relative and he then proceeded to tell me the exact same story," he said.
"It was a nice enough story and I just wondered how on earth it could be true."
"I couldn't really see a link between a tiny atoll like Niue and the once king of England. Then my sister got a family tree and it sort of related the same thing."
It seems to me that we have the same old Hannah Lighfoot story mixed up with some interesting genealogy of the Rex family. Are you, or anyone else from the family able to sort matters out?
There seem to have been many people with the name George Rex - all claiming royal blood!
I would like see a resolution of this messy situation.
