Hello Jane,
Yes, I believe I will be able to help you with some, if not most of your questions.
First, Marianna Rhett, daughter of Col. Alfred Rhett and Marie Alice Sparks, married Francis Irenee du Pont on Sept. 1, 1897.Marianna was the granddaughter of Barnwell Rhett (Robert Barnwell Rhett, Father of Secession).Col. Alfred Rhett was the second son of Robert Barnwell Rhett (b. December 21, 1800; d. September 14, 1876) and his first wife, Elizabeth Washington Burnet (b. December 24, 1809; d. December 14, 1852).Alfred was born October 18, 1829; and died November 12, 1889. His wife, Marie, was born March 25, 1848.Marianna, the fifth survivng child (#6 of 8)of Alfred and Marie Rhett, was born December 16, 1876.Her husband Francis I. du Pont was born December 3, 1873.
I have looked through the "Rhett Genealogy" compiled by Barnwell Rhett Heyward, in search of your husband's link to Barnwell Rhett. The name "Haskell" is helpful determining the relationship. I must point out that this "genealogy" is incomplete and I really don't have enough information at present to determine exactly which line is your husband's.However, I am proposing the following line, which appears most likely to be Cousin Haskell's, based on info you posted.
1. James Smith Rhett (brother of Robert Barnwell Rhett and also my 3rd GGF, Thomas Moore Rhett), m. Charlotte Haskell.
2. Albert Rhett (b. 2/6/1833; d. 8/11/1895) married Frances Emma Jessie (b. 5/24/1844) on 9/3/1874.
3. Albert Haskell Rhett (b. 7/22/1875).
This is all I can find on this line.Does this seem reasonable as far as the names and dates? This would make Albert Haskell Rhett the grandfather of your husband, correct? He would also be your husband's great-uncle through the marriage of Benjamin Smith Rhett (brother of James Smith Rhett) and Pauline Haskell (sister of Charlotte Haskell).I hope I have presented this correctly - it's easy to confuse!
Your father-in-law's grandparent's names (if this is the correct line) should have been Albert Rhett and Frances Emma Jessie (#2 above). They would have been one generation removed from Barnwell Rhett, who was in the same generation as James Smith Rhett and Charlotte Haskell (parents of Albert). Therefore, Barnwell Rhett is your husband's 2nd great grand-uncle.
I hope this has not further confused the issue. If you need further assistance, please let me know.I will be happy to help you in locating the needed documents you seek.Just let me know the details of what you need and your mailing address.
I hope to hear from you soon.My best to your family.
