Joseph Ricca, San Ponso, Italy 1880s
My name is Joseph Ricca. My great grandfather came to the U.S. in the 1880's. He was recruited to work the copper mines in the Calumet area of Upper Michigan. My great grandfather came to this country from a small farming community in northern Italy called San Ponso. The town is very small and difficult to locate on normal Italian maps. I had to find it on a smaller scale map from Italy. My cousin, Frank, has visited San Ponso and met relatives that still live there (Riccas). My great grandfather was an underground miner in the Calumet and Hecla mines. My father said he was a skilled gardener and could even save a tree everyone else thought was dead.
