I have just uncovered very interesting information on Ebenezaer Rice, Sr. who married Sarah Taintor and Ruth Eveleth, and who was a Revolutionary War Patriot from Worcester/MA in 1777.I am attempting to have Ebenezer Rice, Sr. recognized by the DAR.I have uncountered serious problems that have already resulted in excellent discoveries and some discouraging brick walls.
First the good news, I have found the gravesite of Ebenezer Rice, Sr. He rests in the Fountain Creeks Baptist Church Cemetery in Culleoka/Maury/TN. His headstone had fallen over meaning that it was well protected. So when this old area was discovered with many gravesites, Ebenezer's headstone was discovered and is in excellent condition. His name and date of birth are legible, the day of his death is not legible but June 1831 is clear. (Per the Maury County/TN Historical Society on 2/13/2007)
Second, in order to prove the children in IL were the children of Ebenezer Rice Sr. who died in Maury TN, I must show a probate/distribution of the estate being paid to these children or the heirs in White or Madsion IL after 1831: specifically Abel, Joel, Sarah Sally, and Martha Patsy. Has anyone ever found the probate/distribution of Ebenezer's estate being paid to these children or their heirs in White/Madison IL after 1831?
Third, and very importantly, the Revolutionary War record as described in Maurice Parrish Lightfoot's book, 'Let the Drums Roll...." is wrong! That record belongs to EBER Rice who married Mary Alcott and who died in NY. (Eber Rice was Ebenezer Rice's 1st cousin once removed and the son of Samuel Rice, son of Zebulon, brother of Ebenezer Rice's father Elijah Rice, I believe, and would also be descendants of the Mayflower passenger William White and Jamestown investor John Vassall). For verification of Eber, see the Pension Record for this Eber Rice/Mary Alcott in the National Archives or on Heritage Quest.
Please see the actual bonafide record for Ebenezer Rice, Sr. in "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution" vol 13 page 150.This record proves that Ebenezer Rice, Sr. living in Worcester MA, fought FROM Worcester/MA and IN Vermont at the Bennington Alarm on 20 Aug 1777 not FROM Vermont. Eber Rice is the one living IN Tinmouth/Rutland/Vermont. Can't find where Ebenezer Rice, Sr. is in Vermont in 1792-1799.Does anyone happen to have information or know where our Ebenezer Rice, Sr. was in Vermont during the apparent years 1792-1799 when Abel was born (in 1792) and then Joel was born in (1799)? Does anyone know specifically where they were between 1800 and 1806. Know that he was with daughter Sarah (Sally) in Davidson/TN for her marriage in 1806.
Fourth, I descend from Joel Rice. The almost insurmountable problem I face is proving that any of Ebenezer's younger children are the children of Ruth Eveleth. She was born and is recorded as Ruth of Stow, daughter of Joseph Eveleth and Patience (Hunt) Eveleth. The marriage records all show that Ruth Eveleth (5th daughter of Joseph Eveleth), married Ebenezer Rice, Sr. However, the will leaves a portion of the estate to "my wife Henrietta".I know that the Rice Assn. adds the name Henrietta to Ruth after 1970 but I have been unable to find any RECORD that proves/substantiates this name change. As such, I cannot prove that Ruth Eveleth and Henrietta are the same woman or any proof who the mother of any of these younger children are.And as I cannot locate them in VT, I cannot prove or find that Ruth did NOT die there and Eb did NOT marry a third wife, Henrietta unknown, at any time after 1791.Does anyone have a document/birth record for ANY child born to Ruth Eveleth-Rice??
Fifth, there has always been confusion between the two Joseph Eveleth's, one Ruth's father born in 1726, and his cousin Joseph Eveleth, the Lt., son of Francis, born in 1733 (I am doing this from memory...anyway the younger one). Apparently, it is not known when or where Joseph, the elder, died (per the Princeton/MA Historical Society, 2/20/2007).The Joseph Eveleth shown in 1790 census on the same page with Ebenezer Rice, Thomas Paine, etc. is Lt. Joseph Eveleth, the younger. Does anyone know or have discovered when or where Joseph the elder (born 1726, son of John Eveleth and Hannah Haynes) died so that I may be able to find a will/probate record that may identify his daughter Ruth Eveleth-Rice or her heirs, who they were, and if still living, where?
I know that this will be hard to believe as the Lightfoot record and the Ruth 'Henrietta' Eveleth name is so deeply entrenched in the apparent historical record of this Ebenezer Rice, Sr. record. But my findings thus far are accurate and I really need help from anyone who may have some information that fits or resolves these BIG problems with the published records apparently, by everyone!
I have also posted this same information in response to a specific Ebenezer Rice query so it is here twice; hopefully this posting will be more readily visible than one embedded under another query. I am seeking any tidbit of information from anyone as apparently the true story of this Ebenezer Rice, Sr. is being revealed and his family history differs from what is held as truth and valid today.I am having to produce actual documentation and verifiable records from THAT time, and so far I have found nothing that supports Ruth Henrietta Eveleth.
I KNOW that Lightfoot has been stomping all over Eber Rice's Revolutionary War record for years, giving it to Ebenezer Rice, Sr.
Time to allow BOTH of these Rice Patriot's their OWN records.
