I have never seen any genealogical links for Abraham Rideout to his ancestors in England. Some say he came over on the ship Chandler but I have never found a ship by that name.Abraham lived in Haverhill MA and by his second wife Jemima Davis they had a son Benjamin 1717-1737 who died there and his tombstone can be seen here.
I think you are right about the origin of the name Rideout, I do see reference in English writings about rideouts or scouts that rode ahead to lead the way.
I do not think the Rideout’s were Loyalists during the Revolution. The only one at the time living outside of Maine in New Brunswick was Nicholas 1737-1833.In Kidder's book called Eastern Maine and Nova Scotia during the Revolution, is an extract of a letter from Colonel John Allen to the Massachusetts Council, Boston, 25 Feb. 1777.
"I must beg leave at this time to acquaint your Honours, that the inhabitants of the county of Subury in Nova Scotia, now a county in N. B. had authorized me to appear in their behalf and agreeable to instructions would make known their warm and zealous attachment for the United States.Esteeming themselves the subjects of the States and are determined to defend the cause to their utmost."
The Massachusetts Council then sent troops to Sudbury Co. to protect these people, and John Allen was made 1st Colonel for the Expedition. There is also reference to Col Allen stopping overnight with the Rideout family in Maugerville. Then Nicholas had a brother Abraham 1747-1844 and Abraham was a private in Capt. Merrill's Co., 18 Mass. Regiment, commanded by Col. Samuel Brewer. He enlisted 19 June 1778 for nine months and was discharged 13 Mar. 1779.
We are very distant cousins and only share Abraham Rideout 1685-1725 as a common ancestor, I am descended from Abraham and his second wife Jemima Davis and my line is like this
Abraham Rideout 1685-1725 and Jemima Davis 1697-1746 Rowland Rideout 1715-1779 and Judith Bedell abt 1717-1800 James Rideout 1741-1809 and Mary Blackman 1741-1815 David O Rideout 1779-1860 and Keziah Wood 1783-1856 Luke Rideout 1819-1884 and Caroline L Totman 1818-1898 (A Mayflower descendant) William H H Rideout 1841-1920 and Lydia A Waymouth 1847-1885 Carl C Rideout 1876-1927 and Alice H Fernald 1880-1960 Edward H Rideout 1903-1986 and Edena L Strout 1904-1992 my parents.
I was born in Massachusetts which was wonderful as a kid, snow, ice, etc but as an adult it got old fast so I came to California and now live in the San Diego area. This morning Jan 25 the low was 52 and at 10am its 72 :)
Interesting about how your grandfather was named.I have often thought it would be nice to be a Rideout from NB because everyone lived and died in that general area and genealogy would not involve a lot of travel. On my side everyone is scattered all over New England.
