My grandfather was born in Winona, Minnesota in the 1880s to William and Wilhelmina Rieck. There were about 8 children, including two named Martin who died in infancy and were buried somewhere in Winona. Growing up, I was told our family was "German" but in looking at census records in the historical society, dating to when my grandfather was a child, the family apparently referred to itself as "Prussian" to the census taker.
Growing up there were very few Riecks in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area; the phone book now lists quite a large number. We pronounced our name without the "e" (as in "Rick") but I don't know how widespread this is (believe me, it was confusing growing up!).
Would love to know if we have relatives out there somewhere!I can locate more specific family tree information through my mother (my father, Charles Donald Rieck, is deceased) and would be happy to compare notes.
