My wifes father was John Riggott born 29 October 1913, died 6 July 2001. His father was also John Riggott who died at the age of 39 in a railway accident. He was with a large party of football supporters on the way to the first cup final to be held at Wembley Stadium. Somehow he fell onto the line from the platform at Grassmoor Railway Station, in the crowd nobody noticed. He must have been knocked unconscious. His body was found after the train pulled out, none of the supporters knew of this until they got back from the match. His wife Mary Ann Holmer (or Homer) had died at the age of 33 so this left 5 children orphaned. They were Phylis (Cauldwell), Priscilla (Kill), Minnie (Draper), Walter and young John. Another daughter Gladys had died from diptheria at age 15 about 1907. A national newspaper took up the story and donations from the public provided a trust fund for the children to be taken in by other families, who were paid a weekly allowance to look after the children.
