I am a descendent of Stephen Rigler/Riegler and Hannah Dediker and their son, George Washington Rigler.Don’t know when Stephen and Hannah were born but would guess around 1785.I believe that Stephen was the son of Georg Andreas Riegler who was the son of Hanss Stephen Riegler (who immigrated from Germany to the US).
Besides son George (b. 1812), Stephen and Hannah had five other children: Charles Rigler born 1810 in Philadelphia; Ann Margaret Rigler; Steven Rigler; Catherine Rigler and Elizabeth Rigler. After the children were born, Stephen died and the first two boys, Charles and George, became separated.George was apprenticed to a gardener in Philadelphia.Charles and his mother Hanna, along with the other children, went west and settled Missouri where Hanna married a Mr. Selzer.
Son George W. Rigler and his first wife, Sophia Mann (born Sept. 30, 1813; died Feb. 28, 1853), were married in Philadelphia, Pa.They had seven children -- Five daughters:Christina Rigler (born: Nov. 14, 1834 in Philadelphia); Mary Dediker Rigler Tibbetts (born: 8 Sep 1836 in Philadelphia; died: 18 Feb 1911 in Galesburg, IL; married George W. Tibbetts on 5 Jan 1854, in Centreville, IA; children:Fannie Sophia Tibbetts and Alice Lillian Tibbetts); Elizabeth Rigler Stanton (married Nathan Albert Stanton –– Joseph Stanton's brother –– see below); Ann Rigler Armstrong; and Katie Rigler Pettit. And two sons: Jack Rigler (drowned in the Civil War Battle of Shiloh –– April 1862), and George Rigler (died at early age).George W. Rigler and Sophia Mann migrated with their seven children from Philadelphia, Pa., to Lee County, Iowa, near Ft. Madison, about 1850.Sophia Mann Rigler died Feb 27, 1853 in Lee County and was buried there. After her death, in the autumn of 1853, George Rigler moved with his children to a farm northwest of Cincinnati, Iowa.He then married Sophia Johnson Stanton, a widow after her first husband, Joseph Stanton (b. 1802), passed away in 1844.George W. Rigler and Sophia Johnson Stanton had one child together, a son named Elza Moore Rigler, on May 3, 1855.
Elza married Caroline (Carrie) M. Hays (b. September 14, 1859).They were married on June 16, 1880 and had seven children:Mary Rigler (b. Apr. 13, 1881); George W. (b. 1883/d. 1947); Harry H. (b. 1886 / d. 1956); Maud V. (b. 1888 / d. 1949); John P. (b. 1891 / d. March 24, 1972); Dwight (b. 1894 / d. 1975); and Ben (b. 1896 / d. 1946).
Elza M. Rigler died November 22, 1923 and Caroline M. Hays died February 8, 1947.They are both buried in College Springs, Iowa.
