I am looking for any information on my great grandmother's uncles, many of which settled in Oakland, CA in the 1840s and beyond.
The family comes from Athlone ("on the Roscommon side of the bridge" is how our ancestors always worded it). There appear to be 6 brothers (John, Edward, Patrick, Michael, James, and Martin). It's possible that one of them may be a cousin. Here's what happened to them:
John Rigney came to Oakland, California about 1846.Later returned east to Brooklyn, NY and married Bridget Harney. Then returned to Athlone and died there, but had 4 children who came to Philadelphia PA around 1880-1900 (John, Michael, Margaret who married Peter Byrnes, and Catherine who married John McBride - Margaret is my great grandmother).
Edward Rigney came to Oakland CA in 1846 with John and stayed there (had a large family).
Patrick Rigney Stayed in Ireland and had 4 children (Patrick, Frank, Margaret, and Mary Ann), all of whom came to California in the late 1880s.
Michael Rigney came to Philadelphia, PA and had 2 sons John and Timothy.Michael and his son John died in Philadelphia, but Timothy moved to CA in the late 1880s.
James Rigney stayed in Ireland, and had one son James who became a schoolmaster, moving from Athlone to Sligo.
Martin Rigney came to CA about 1850-1860 and had a large family.Timothy, son of Michael, came to live with Martin when his father and brother died in Philadelphia.
