I just spent a day down in Harrison County, WV going through all kinds of records . . . I found my grandmother's marriage record (she married a Gillespie) and it gives her father's name as John Lake Rigsby.Just today I received her birth record, and it lists her father's name as Lake Rigsby.I have looked through a LOT of information online as well, and can't find many Rigsbys.Of course the difference in spelling makes it more difficult, as I am sure you have found!!The best thing about the birth record is that it tells his county of birth !I finally have some direction . . . it was Ritchie County, so I will be off again, looking for any Rigsbys in Ritchie County now!And just when I thought I had a link with a Harriet "L" who was married to a John Rigsby - in Pocahontas County, I think . . .And of course there is the little matter of the 'shifting counties' in WV, pre-1863 & statehood!!!I found the list of all the counties and what counties they were 'carved out of' online, somewhere.Thank goodness I printed it out!
How many spellings of Rigsby do you think there are?Probably as many as there are of Gillespie, I am finding. When I looked at a census, I looked at "Rigby", Rigbey", "Rigsbey", "Rigsby" and maybe a "Rigsbee", too.
Thanks again for your feedback, I am grateful to have heard back and know that someone else is out there, looking, too!!
Oh, I did find my grandmother listed in the 1920 census, as Mildred J. Rigsby, born abt 1915, and residing in Harrison County. At that time, her mother had re-married and was under "Wickenhofer", and I did not find any John Rigsby listed - - I have never heard what happened, I thought I might see if he had died in the war, but now that I am writing this, and know that he was "Lake Rigsby" on the birth record, I am going to go looking for him again !!
