Their 1880 census entry is pretty misleading. It shows Malinda Rigsby 30 divorced, Callie Rigsby 20 married, and an unnamed son Rigsby 1 month old. I had figured Callie and Malinda were sisters who married Rigsby brothers, and that the son was Callie's because of the order they were listed. Instead, they are Rigsby sisters. Malinda had been married to J J Capshaw. Callie I think is not really married, or her last name would not be Rigsby. The son is Malinda's, but I'm not sure if he's from J J Capshaw.
Among marriage records in DeKalb Co TN are:
1889-03-12 Malinda Rigsby + T W Fitts 1896-03-25 Callie Rigsby + J M Fitts
Clearly this is the people in question.
I went back and looked at the 1900 census entry. Knowing that T W's wife should be Malinda, I can see how it might say "Lindy", not "Liney". That's a mighty small stem on the "d", though. I also couldn't believe I didn't notice before, but it says stepniece Hattie, even though single, has had three children, two living. Robert and William must be her sons.
I'm still not sure what a step-niece would be exactly, but whatever it is, I think Hattie isn't. I think she is a step-sister-in-law; or in other words a sister-in-law of Malinda, but not of T W, and thus a wife of Malinda's brother. As usual with Rigsby families, there weren't many boys, and Malinda had only two brothers. James shows up on the 1900 census, but John disappears after 1880.
The conclusion, then, has to be that John Doad's son John K Rigsby married Hattie, had sons Robert and William, and died before 1900. Knowing that, I can now identify this DeKalb Co marriage that I previously couldn't:
1895-04-07 Hattie Rigsby + Bob Ingrum
That must be John K's widow re-marrying. Unfortunately, I don't have any records showing a John marrying a Hattie, so I don't know her maiden name.
Thanks for connecting the William of the Walker Co draft registration with this family, too. I don't know that I would have figured that one out.
Interestingly enough, I was looking at your family a couple of days ago. I'm organizing all the Rigsby vital records I've found, and was working on some WV deaths. I found some related to William + Willie, and still couldn't figure out who the William was.
