We are seeking male descendants of Joseph Riney/Raney (c1772-c1845), who still bear the Raney (or Riney) surname, to participate in the Raney DNA Project. These participants would be the descendants of Joseph by either Ruth Silvers or Cecelia Cissell.
If you are a descendant of any of Joseph’s brothers who would also like to participate in this project, you are welcome to do so, as well.
For purposes of this project, a participant must be a male, be a direct descendant of Joseph Raney (or one of his brothers), and be able to track a purely male line back to Joseph (or one of his brothers).
Although this DNA project won’t give us specifics about the life and times of our ancestors, participation by several descendants will be helpful in discovering how our family ties into other Raney/Riney lines, and perhaps even pinpoint our place of origin.
The Raney DNA Project uses the Y-DNA 25 marker test and is administered by Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas. For your information, there is a total charge of $171.00 (including postage) for each test in this project. We encourage interested parties who are otherwise ineligible to participate (ie., females like me, or males who are descended from female Raneys, etc.) but who can band together to help defray the cost of a test, to do so. Please don’t let just the cost discourage you if you are otherwise able to participate.
If you are a direct male descendant of Joseph Raney, please consider participating in this worthwhile project. If you, like me, are female, and know of a direct male descendant, please consider encouraging him to participate, and/or contributing to the cost of a test.
For more information, please contact Marynell Bryant, Project Administrator, directly, or contact me and I will be happy to forward your questions.
