Lewis Scott Ripley (b. 1858 in Mount, Pulaski, Illinois), was the son of George Washington Ripley who was born and died in Ohio, (1834-1883) and his wife Martha Jane Downing (1836-1899). SHE was born in Illinois, and that's how some of the children came to be born there. GW Ripley was the son of John Ripley (1786-1872) and his wife Eunice or Unity McBride (1795-1888). John and Eunice were married 22 February 1821 in Harrison County, Ohio. John was born in Pennsylvania, and he was the son of John Ripley (1764 PA - 1854 Ohio). This John Ripley is cited as a registered Patriot with DAR. John served in the Revolutionary War as a young private in the Virginia Continental Line.
This Pennsylvania branch of Ripleys were not the same as the Ripleys of New England. They came from Germany, with the surname 'Rupple', and actually adopted the surname 'Ripley', or at least were given that name, by the PA clerks who could not handle German pronunciations.
John's father was Ludwig Rupple, who was born Jan 1 1727 in Evangelisch, Ostheim, Oberhessen, Hessen.
There is much information on this branch of the family. It is an illustrious branch of the family with many descendants.
