Hi Sue,
Thanks for this -
I've got Jane and Geret's daughter Sarah's death cert which names her parents. Plus an online marriage cert for her - she married Robert Morrison in Templemore, Londonderry in 1873 - confirmed by a later birth cert in Scotland (where Sarah had to state the date and place of marriage). I also have a Scottish census (1881) record where her younger brother James, aged 19, is visiting.
So Jane and Geret had at least three children : Robert (bc1851) Sarah (bc 1852/3) and James (bc 1861/2). Sarah died in 1884. Do you know of any others? where I might find Robert, Sarah and James' birth records? You have a birth of Robert in 1851. Did you find that online?
Rippys in America :
I've been looking at old estate papers published relating to Strabane Tyrone (late 18th century or thereabouts)- letters from James Hamilton to the Earl of Abercorn, marquis of Strabane.. These reports name Hugh Rippy, a tenant, and his death in December 1788. Another paper relating to land transfer disputes between him and a McNamee mentions that Hugh had a son but does not name him. The paper which mentions his death states that he left no will, and four daughters who were not provided for.
Another document in the same set of papers a few years later talks about a William Rippy.A fire which seems to have put a William Rippy in rent arrears and cost £30 in damages in 1790.
Lots of docs which only name "Rippy" before 1788, having various disputes about land/rent, and they also mention a Rippy fleeing to America to avoid some sort of hearing/ejection. (Earl of Abercorn/Marquis of Strabane's Barons Court, perhaps?) The fact he uses the surname only suggests there was only one tenant called rippy at that time. Or only one troublesome one!
A minute book 50 years on also mentions a Robert Rippy, who in 1846 takes a pauper James Levison out of an institution and gives him a paid job.
Maybe some of these papers might help piece families together? I so far certainly can't!
I don't know where you are, but I'm flying to Dublin in a couple of weeks, do you want anything looked up?
Joan
