y-DNA Surname Project - Risner/Risener/Reisner/Etc.
A surname project has been started through www.familytreedna.com under the name“Risner/Risener/Reisner Relationships and Ancestry”.
Objectives of the project are:
1. To confirm common ancestry of male descendants named Risner, Risener, Reisner and other Soundex similar names (R256) living in the United States.
2. To confirm common ancestry of family lines in North/South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and those of similar surnamed families in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio.
3. To trace our ancestry to its European roots and establish kinship worldwide with others of Soundex similar surnames.
The DNA being tested for matching is that from the Y chromosome of male descendants. It is extracted from cells obtained from swabbing the inside of your mouth with cotton swabs from a test kit supplied by Family Tree DNA.The procedure is painless and takes a couple of minutes to do.The test kit is returned afterwards to Family Tree DNA with payment and they do the rest.
Identifying yourself as part of our surname project will qualify you for a discount in the cost of testing and matching. The basic 12-marker test costs $99 plus postage to return the kit. This is enough to confirm that two people are related.Upgrading to 25 or 37 markers will establish how closely related they are back to the “Most Recently Shared Ancestor”.The DNA is stored for 25 years so upgrading can be done at any time; something often done when there is a match. The cost of upgrading is an additional $49 to expand from 12 to 25 markers or $99 to expand from 12 to 37 markers. It is also possible to have the higher number of markers determined with your initial testing.Family Tree DNA will contact you if a match is found giving you the opportunity to correspond with others with whom you share common DNA markers.
In addition to looking for matches to other individuals, the test will provide you with information on your deep paternal ethnic origin (Haplotype). This information indicates from where your family line potentially originates.
Participating Individuals must male and carry the project surname or a variation of the surname according to Soundex rules. The Soundex code is R256 for the surnames of interest in this project.
