Well, it is considerably more complicated than Anthony Rivers having "be-scratched" the melusine shields, although that certainly had something to do with it. First of all you must understand the significance of Cyprus, which had become combined with two other kingdoms: Armenia and Jerusalem, sometimes called "Acre". Besides the illegitimacy of Jacques(or James)II, his successor James III of Cyprus was defeated in 1474 and was "succeeded" by his illegitimate brother Eugene Matteo de Lusignan(1485-1523) who never tried to assert his claim. Two different "queens" of Cyprus retired to Italy where each "bequeathed" her claim to Cyprus to a different Italian state: one to her husband (or his nephew) the Duke of Savoy and the other to the Venetian Republic! Also various princes including the King of Naples and Rene of Anjou added "King of Jerusalem" to their titles when the Antioch-Lusignan--technically the Chatillon--claim died with James III in 1474. This was all occuring during the lifetime of Anthony Rivers, an Antioch-Lusignan descendant. Rivers's brother-in-law, Edward IV of England, perhaps had some concern that this be asserted, as he had certainly matriculated arms for his wife showing Lusignan of Cyprus in the first quarter and did a similar service for his brother-in-law Anthony Rivers, in various versions of his arms. The declaration of an "Antioch-Lusignan-Rivers" dynasty seems to have had something to do with (other) semi-secret aspects of negotiating the marriage of Anthony Rivers to the queen of Scots which, however, never took place. Remember that the Crusades did not seem so long ago to a fifteenth-century king like Edward IV of England. As far as the manuscripts you refer to, try exploring the much more extensive writings of Wilfred Jeannerette Rivers's father, William James Rivers. Among the documents pertaining to the new "dynasty" you will find that Rivers would much rather have had the British royal family on the throne of a restored Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. In fact, when Ernst IV Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha died in 1893 leaving his own claim to (Cyprus- and) Jerusalem to King Edward VII of Great Britain, Professor Rivers's concern was that "the seventh Edward" as he called the British monarch, would not claim Jerusalem through the Saxe-Coburg line which had it, circuitously, from Margrethe Hohenstauffen (1268-1270) who had left her claim to the Wettins. The Hohenstauffens had had a bad history with the ancestors of Rivers such as the Lusignans and de Briennes and other families who had hunted them to extinction, notably ending with Conradin and his half-brother Manfred Hohenstauffen, who was beheaded in Italy for "lese majeste". After 1893 Rivers conceived of King Edward VII of Great Britain gloriously restoring the Christian throne of Jerusalem, not with this Wettin claim but through the dynasty of "Antioch-Lusignan-Rivers", never thinking to propose himself or any other Rivers from South Carolina. Why, you may as well propose to send a Travis James or a James Scott from South Carolina today to take a throne in Jerusalem! As it was, Britain gave Palestine itself to Lord Rothschild--the "British Mandate"--who created a modern republic in 1948. And the royal houses seem to have accepted that the titular claim was inherited (along with the Stewart claim) by the Bavarian royal house, headed since 1996 by Franz Wittelsbach.
