A Conversation with John Marshall and Spencer Roane
You are invited to eavesdrop on an imagined conversation of two titans in the struggle to shape early America's constitutional order at 6:00 p.m. on January 31, 2006 in the Law School's Moot Court Room. John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States (1755-1835), will sit down with Spencer Roane (1762-1822), Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia. These Richmond neighbors shared a passion for their new republic but clashed repeatedly about its federal arrangement in landmark cases like Martin v. Hunter's Lessee (1816) and Cohens v. Virginia (1821).
