In researching our Mays family, I came across two obituaries in the Lynchburg newspaper -- Capt. William R. Roane died in 1833 in Amherst Co VA.His wife, Mary E. Roane, died in Amherst on 8 Oct. 1829 leaving eight children.
In his Amherst will, Capt. Roane mentions children Cornelia T. (who married William S. Claiborne); James M. (died before age 21 by 1842); William R.; Sarah E.; Virginia Eppes (married Stephen D. Bowen or Brown); Lucy Catherine; Elizabeth who predeceasedher father; and Mary C. who married Fayette Norvell.
When Elizabeth died before her father, a record in Amherst County mentions stock she had been given by her grandparents Burwell and Mary Smith. This stock passed on to her father. The children also had an interest in the estate of their paternal grandparents, Col. James E. and Elizabeth Roane of Charles City County, and in the Jordan estate in Brunswick County.
Other information I found: In 1823 William R. Roane deeded land to the children of Richard H. Burks (wife Polly). In 1826 a Sally Slagg of Charles City Co. gave land to James E. Roane for the benefit of Sarah C. Roane and her children: Jonathan, Rebecca, Joseph, Sarah, Christopher, and Elizabeth.
I am wondering if William R. Roane is connected to the John S. Roane who married Harriet Jordan, daughter of Edmund or Edward Jordan.Their daughter Elizabeth married a William Mays of Amherst Co VA.Did James E. Roane and Elizabeth have a son John S. Roane? Was Elizabeth a Jordan? Because somehow William R. Roane connects to the Jordans of Brunswick County.I appreciate any help sorting this out.Thank you.
