Michigan Robere Family

Hi, I was just surfing through the net trying to find details of the origin of the Robere family name when I came across your posting. My mother's maiden name is Robere and several members of her family have been trying for many years to trace its genealogy - however, without much luck.
The little that we do know is that her grandfather originated from France, as the name obviously implies. As the story goes, apparently while working on schooners and boats of such nature, he came to St. Pierre et Miquelon as a young boy.If you are not aware of these islands, they are two french territories located off the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada. When the ship arrived there, he apparently jumped ship and soon after arrived in a small community in Southern Newfoundland where he married and began a family. His name was Leo James Robere. He went on to raise 3 daughters and 2 sons - Leo James (II) and Peter. All of which are now deceased.Leo James (II) was my grandfater. He also raised a family in that same small fishing community - 9 daughters and 4 sons.Little is known of his life before he arrived here in Newfoundland.Considering the time frame, early 1900's, and the fact that he had deserted his country, it is not surprising that it was not a "Hot topic" of discussion.
The Robere family still exists now in Newfoundland, but is dwindling in size.
I know it is probably very unlikely that there are any relations - I just thought it was interesting to learn of the origins of the family name.I hope you find this interesting.
