Linda,
Thank You so much for sharing your information. I called my Great Aunt so that I would be writing to you with as accurate of information as possible. She is 79 and has been researching this line for 30 some odd years. Here is her version of the story handed down to her.

A boy of about 4 years of age was stolen by indians during a raid, He was called 'little hunter'. Later he was sold by the indians for a jug of whiskey to a 'black robe' (priest). The priest gave the boy the first name of Hypolite and used the surname that the boy had remembered. His origions are unknown. Although Pennsylvania is a popular assumption, there is no documentation of this, other then the marriage record. (I too, have a copy of this) There is a book on southern Missouri 'history' that states Hypolite Robert was born in 1753 in Fort Chartres, Randolph Co., ILL to the parents of Louis Robert and Marie Kiercereaux. Louis Robert being the son of Louis Robert and Marie Madelaine Mercier. This information is also online at LDS site. Note here that this information is no more accurate documentation then the Pennsylvania connection, and should be further researched. Hypolite's wife is born in 1754 in Kaskaskia,Illinois so that is a tentative connection to that place.

When all is said and done it is doubtful that anyone will be able to prove beyond hopeful speculation as to where Hypolite Robert came from.

Hypolite Robert is also known as Hypolite Robert dit Polite, as are his children. Many eventually dropped the "Robert dit" and simplified their name to Polite and/or Politte. Dit in the french language means: Also known as

Thank You for your time and trouble in posting your message.
