For Virgil and others with an interest in the mulatto Adam Rogers’ line, the Fall 2010 issue of NEHGS’ “American Ancestors,” Vol. 11, no. 4, pages 51 and 52, had an article by Diane Rapaport about John Rogers the Rogerene's "kidnapping" of slave Joan from King Beebe of Plum Island. (My cousin Russ Haley alerted me to the article.)
The mulatto Adam Rogers was one of the slaves in the household of James Rogers of New London, as was Joan. John the Rogerene helped administer James’ estate.
John the Rogerene was accused by Dr. Benjamin Trumbull in Ct history books (100+ years after the fact) of having fathered two children by a slave. Connecticut court records identify Adam as a mulatto. Ms. Rapaport referenced Framingham, Massachusetts, court records stating that slave Joan was ALSO a mulatto (and that her mother was Maria).
“There was testimony in the Massachusetts case by a number of New Londoners – neighbors and Rogers relatives – who all consistently said that Joan was a ‘Malatoo’ and that Joan’s husband was a ‘Negro man’.” - Quoting from an e-mail from Diane Rapaport. (Negro John Jackson was Joan’s husband.)
This accounts for two mulattos in the Rogers household and this occurrence seems to dovetail with the accusation, unless any other mulattos might turn up.
Because of Joan’s status as a mulatto and a similar time frame for mulatto Adam Rogers' birth (ca 1670, as expressed in George Waller's genealogy of Adam), one might suppose that Joan was Adam Rogers' sister. It suggests that Maria was therefore Adam’s mother as well.
This to me is additional circumstantial evidence that Dr. Benjamin Trumbull's accusations about John the Rogerene had merit. Although not absolutely certain proof of relationships, it appears to me to clarify the connections among Adam, Joan, Maria, and John the Rogerene.
(Still puzzling to me is Trumbull's statement that John "put her [the mother] away" after fathering the two children. Can anyone explain that phrase?)
