Polly Rollins, b 1810/Lived in Spartanburg, SC
Help!!!I am researching Polly Rollins of Spartanburg, SC. She was born in 1810, married abt 1824, widowed between 1847-50.
There are several Polly Rollin-s, but this is the one I am researchin, who appears on the 1850 Spartanburg SC Census.
1820 Census she would have only been 10 yrs. I do not know where she was born.
On 1830 Census she would have been married (since c. 1824) with 1 child 6yrs and 1 child 4yrs. Poly and family may not have been in Spartanburg.
No 1840 Census found for her in Spartanburg. Family may have been living somewhere else. Do not know husband.
1850 Census: we see
Polly Rollins, age 40 b 1810, no husband listed
Children:
Joseph Rollins, age 26, b. 1824
Louisa Rollins, age 22, b. 1828
James Rollins, age 11, b. 1839 *******
S.A. (F), age 9, b. 1841
Thomas, age 7, b. 1843
M.A., (F) age 5, b. 1845
Jane, age 3, b. 1847
Her husband was gone by 1850. She had a farm, living next to Ned Rollins (1850 Spartanburg, SC Non-Polulation Schedule for Agriculture), and several other Rollins families. She lived near Bishop families too.
I do not see her in an 1860 census. In the 1870 census she is found living with Nancy Stone, 26, and her 6 yr old daughter. Farm is gone. Polly Rollins was 60 years old. She does not appear in the 1880 census. (d. between 1860-1870)
Her son, James Vernon Rollins, is my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, who married Harriet Bishop b. c. 1839,(Harriet is listed as Annet) daughter of William B. Bishop.
James Rollins and Harriet Bishop (dau of William B. Bishop) married and her whole family moved to Harbins, Cherokee Co., Ga by 1860. (on census) The Bishops bought a farm and stayed in Bartow Co., Ga. James Vernon and Harriet Rollins moved to Chattanooga, TN. The oldest child was Andrew Mansel Rollins, and the youngest was Louella Rollins, my gr-gr-grandmother. The third child, William B. Rollins, lived in Chattanooga, and the fourth, Crofford, is not known beyond 1880 census. In the 1880 Census their name was spelled Rawlings. In the 1870 Census it was spelled Rawlings also, and Harriet had not yet moved to Chattanooga, but James and Andrew were there. Harriet was probably staying with her father till J.V was settled. By 1900 the name was back to Rollins.
J.V. Rollins was known as "Vern", and Vernon is often used in my family. I think Polly Rollins was born and married somewhere else, but is somehow related to the other Rollins families of Spartanburg because her farm is so close to Ned and Edward Rollins.
She is probably Mary Polly (as is usual for the time).
I have found David, Edward, Robert and TJ Rollins on the 1840 Census, but their wives are all accounted for.
There is David on the 1830 census, and a William B. Rollans. I am looking for any other suggestions! What about NC or Georgia???
Also I have nothing to go on about the other children.
I'm wondering if the name Vernon or Stone is related.
Thank you in advance for any help you may have for me.
