Margaret Minthorne Romain
I have the image of the last will & testament of Margaret Minthorne Romain, widow of Nicholas Romain4. They resided on her portion of the Minthorne farm located on the NE corner of the Bowery (Dutch for farm) & E. Houston intersection. Specifically, her portion included the current Extra Place between E. 1st & E. 2nd streets. The entire farm consisted of the land between the Bowery & 2nd Avenue and from Houston St. to present-day E. 5th St. She was the niece & daughter-in-law of Sara Minthorne Romain, widow of Samuel Romain3 (Claes Jansen2, Jan1). Samuel's line is not well known. The Dutch genealogist, Herbert Ackerman, had pieces of it but didn't make the connections.
In Margaret's will, she names her chidren in what I believe is chronological order as the first 4 have already taken possession of portions of her land. They are Hannah, Samuel, Phillip, Sarah, Nicholas and Margaret.
In the 1790 census, they were recorded as Remin and thereafter as Romain/e.
