David Smith and Sallie Romans/Romaine are documented as the parents of Noble Smith b. 1814 in a publication about the Ledford family of Harlan County.(Noble m. Nancy Ledford in 1835).
This excert comes from the book, Generations: An American Family, by John Egerton:
"...and it wasn't too many years after that until David [Smith] married Sally Romaine...but poor David had more grief ahead of him.He was helping his father look after his brothers and sisters when his own wife Sally had a baby boy they named Noble-but then Sally took sick and died, and David had that baby to raise by his self..."
David never remarried and died in 1828 of small pox.The book indicates that Noble was an only child.
Family Search lists Joshua Romans of Washtington Co., Va. as Sally's father.
One World Tree at Ancestry.com lists Jacob as the father of Sally and Joshua as the father of Jacob.
Lee County, Va. is really close to the section of Harlan County where the Ledford/Smiths resided. So close that almost everyone filed records there during this time period because Harlan was still a part of Knox County and the court house in Virginia was a much, much shorter distance to them.
I don't know where Washington County is located, however.
