About that- further study of the census records suggests that Joseph may have arrived several years earlier than Mary & kids. According to the earliest census I have (1910), the earliest US-born was John, born in New York around 1898. I'm searching for him now, and have contacted the church where my grandparents were married for more info. Concerning 'Roman', it is possible they used that name, as they were identified by that in the 1910 census, although from the look of it, it doesn't sound like the name my dad told me. However, they are 'Romans' in the next two censuses, so whether this was an earlier name change or a typo is unknown to me.
