Hi. My name is Edgar Roupe. I have been trying to find out more about my families history and origins. The family's last name was originally Roop and when my granfather joined the military there was a mis-print on his record; they spelled his name Roupe instead. Since he was under the legal age to join the military anyway, he didn't make a big deal about it since this might cause them to double check some other details like his real age (he joined to get out of the orphanage he lived in). The name stuck and when he married he passed on the R-o-u-p-e spelling to the rest of his family. He was the third one to bear his name (Edgar) and I am the fifth. The first two in the family were definately Roops, not Roupes. Therefore with the exception of my immediate family, I am not related to anyone who spells the name r-o-u-p-e. I was always told it is a German name and that the first Roops in America came from Alsace-Lorraine and settled in Pennsylvania. Most of the males in my family have been rifle makers up until me, having no real interest in guns. To my knowledge there is one Roop rifle still in existence and it belongs to a collector in california. I just want some verification of the origins of the family name, the culture, etc. Any information is appreciated.
