There WAS a John Roper Jr.His name appears as John Roper Jr once in the Parish records of St. Peter's Parish.11 April 1686 the baptism of his daughter Mary is recorded as daughter of John Roper Jr, & Susan. In that same year the Vestry book records a meeting of 3 March that includes John Roper Sr. as a Vestryman. Then 25 Aug 1687 another Mary is recorded in the Parish register as daughter of John Roper, SR. - apparently his last child. These are the only times either one had this designation.John Roper, the vestryman, died in March 1698, and the next child in the parish register is for Anne daughter of John Roper 18 Feb 1699.
The Junior and Senior designations did not necessarily mean a relationship between the two John Ropers - it could also be just a way of designating which was older and which younger.
The John Roper who died in 1737 in Charles City had a widow Susan or Susanna and sons William and Joseph so certainly could be the same as John Jr. in the St. Peter's Parish Register of the birth of daughter Mary.John in New Kent also had sons William and Joseph.
The circa 1660 as a birth date for John Jr, is just an estimate based on the baptismal record of daughter Mary.He may have been older or a few years younger, but he was probably at least 20 when his daughter was born.
Other than church records, the records for New Kent County prior to 1787 were destroyed by a fire set by John Price Posey, for which he was hanged. This included the Quit Rent Rolls for 1704. Another fire in 1864 destroyed the remaining records.Records after 1864 are intact.
