Charlotte, Thanks for the reply and the help. I am still plugging along on this for my friend.
I think I have ruled out the tale that 3 sons served in the Confederacy and 3 sons served for the Union.
What I have learned and can prove is that Green B. had 2 sons and 1 grandson who served in the Confederacy. The youngest 2 sons were too young to serve. One of the other six boys was exempt from service due to his occupation as a cobbler (Frank).
The ones I can proof with military service during the Civil War are John, John's son Isaac Green Rawdon, and Levi (with 2 records). I completely ruled out William and found no possiblities for Alexander and George.
I did find that Green B. had an uncle and 4 cousins who fought for the Union Army in Missouri. That was Greenberry's brother, James, and four of his sons. I have just wondered if the story started out with these known facts and then got mixed up through the years.
I have done a thorough search of the military records and just could not find anything to support it.
As to Greenberry, I think he was married at least twice. Abigail Medlock Hill was the second wife. Her first husband was Benjamin Hill and he did not die until 1834. I have not found a marriage record for them, but do know that she is listed as the wife of Greenberry on a document in Chester County in 1838. It lists her as his wife and as the widow of Benjamin Hill.
I cannot find Greenberry on the 1830 census, and just figure sometime around that time he left the Wayne County, Tennessee area. It is supposedly during that time that he was convicted of murder. One descendant believes that was in Memphis, Tennessee. The last official record I have for him is the 1820 census in Wayne County, and then the next one I have is for him listed on the 1838 record in Chester County and then the 1840 census there. After that the next record I have is the will of 1843. A book states that he was in Green County, Alabama in 1845, but from his will being filed in 1843 he was most likely dead by this time.
Hopefully we can stay in touch and share more info.
Thanks for the help and the reply.
Rick
