First of all I would like to reference you to message #74 of this forum, which I had posted earlier.
I am interested in the Roan family for a variety of reasons, first is that Roan is a given name for a GGAunt, Roan Wrenn of Person County, NC. She was the only full sibling of my great-grandmother, Mary Jane Wrenn Fox. Mary Jane and Roan's mother was Catherine Gregory, daughter of Charles Gregory who was born in Goochland County, Va in 1766. Charles Gregory's first wife is not known, and am wondering if there were a Roan/Gregory marriage which brought the given name of Roan into the family. It was not uncommon for daughters to be given a family name of the mother's family, so that it would be continued in the history of a family. Charles Gregory's father, James Gregory, at one point, was a neighbor of some of the Harrelson family of Caswell before the setting off of Person County from the older Caswell County, as indicated in the following document: >>A:87 James GREGORY of Caswell to John JOHNSTON 7 Sep. 1778; 177 a. SS Gents Cr.; adj. Ezekiel HERALDSON [Harrelson]; "part of larger tr. granted to sd Gregory." As I recall, an earlier mention of the Harrelson family placed them in kinship some way with the Roan family or were they just neighbors?
Mary Jane and Roan's father was Sidney Wrenn, whose mother was Mary Hamlin; since it appears that Mary Janes given name may have come from the paternal side of the family; it would follow that the maternal side of Catherine Gregory's family would be recognized in Roan Wrenn.
I will greatly appreciate any insights or data which might shed some light on this possibility.
