The following info was taken from THE ROYALL FAMILY OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA -- AN UPDTE IN1995 -- BY Hardin and Virginia Royall.I am more info if you care to email me direct at firstname.lastname@example.org
Wiley Roiyall (9/2/1841 - 11/21/1863) m Charity Lucinda Harris (9/2/1837-1915) but we were told (authors) by a descendant that "Grandma died at the age of 90!", dtr of Lewis and Hannah Smith Harris of Cherry Lane. She later married William M Brooks (3/8/1854 - ?).Marriage records of Alleghany Co., NC; William Brooks, son of Hardin and Cessa Brooks to Lucinda Royal, daughter of Lewis and Hannah Harris, Feb. 28, 1873, W, V. B. Norman, J. P" Their son, charlie William brooks was b 19 Sept, 1886.
In an interview in 1979, this story was related by Paul Smith, who said that he had heard it many times from hs father-in-law, William F. Royall.Wiley Royall, William Crouse and a gentry boy were near the Virginia line trying to make their way tot he Northern army.As they were in a house with the Home Buard nearby, a woman gave the Genrty boy a dress and bonnet, and he escaped in this outfit to report that he Home Guard had surrounded the house and had set it afire.WHen Wiley Royall and William Crouse ran to escape, they wer shot.
In 1992, we were fortunate to be allowed to read an 1867 copy of a book entitled THE THRILLING ADVENTURES OF DANIEL ELLIS, inwhich Ellis relates a gory detail and deaths of eight of the ten menkilled while trying to escape to Northern lines.Wiley Royal was mentioned but not William Crouse, thought accfording to famly tales, he was surely one o f the two unknown men.
Again thanks to Nancy Putzel, who lent us the book, we were able to visit Wiley's grave and that of the rmainder of the men killed at this time.It is a mass grave near where they were killed and the surrounding terrain still looks thie same.
The grafe is in the Bell Cememtery at Lilmestone Cove, Unicoi County, TN,The historical marker along SR 107 refers to the "Massacre at Limestone Cove," and jsut above it is the cemetery, again with a historical marker, so that it is easily found, once you know the correct roads to follow. In 1993, we used the following roads in Tennessee -- 19E to 173 south to 107 west, turning south at Liestone Cove, Unicoi county, Tennessee
