The elder Joseph Royall came to the Virginia Colonies,1622, bringing in the ship Chartie a group of people which included servants to gentry. He was given a land grant on the James River by the Queen for his transporting the colonists. He was a widower, and subsequently married one of his passengers from the Chartie, Katherine Banks, who came here with her parents. The Royalls had several children, one of whom was Joseph. I am a direct decendant of this line. There are many excellent articles about our family by Gene Royall and Royall Pennell, my first and second cousins respectively. I am a research journalist now living in Virginia. I am looking for unknown facts and artifacts associated with my colonial forefathers. Oh yes,one of Capt. Joseph's passengers had her luggage and clothing spoiled by sea water and she sued Joseph. However, the suit came to naught, because she tried to get him endentured to her. I wonder if perhaps she fancied him, as he was an available widower. Every Royall man I ever saw was handsome and charming. I would imagine Joseph was as well.
