I am a 4th generation Roycroft residing in Baltimore, MD. My great grandfather, John Andrew Roycroft was born in 1844 in Baltimore and enlisted in the Union Navy in 1861. His father, also John, was born in Ireland.
I was put in touch with a Cyril Roycroft in Schull in County Cork who sent me a compilation taken from the County Cork Census of 1821 and again in 1841. A John Roycroft is shown to have been born in 1820. I believe him to be my great-great grandfather. The death certificate of my great grandfather's father states that he was born in County Cork,Ireland. If he is the same,he is the son of Joseph Roycroft who was born in 1786. Joseph and Catherine, his wife, had 10 children.
I will be happy to fax the tree that Cyril compiled if you will send me a fax number.
I visited Schull and other hamlets in the area. There are a number of Roycrofts there including a Roycroft Bicycle Shop owned by a Dick Roycroft which is in Skibbereen. I have a page from the local telephone directory that list the Roycrofts in County Cork.
Trevor Roycroft in Belfast believes that all Roycrofts are related to one who came to Ireland inabout 1600 and took over Leamcon Castle. Reference is also made to Roycrofts who migrated from Wales to England with the Earl of Richmond, later known as King Henry VII, in 1585. They were skilled bookbinders and printers who served the Tudor family in Wales and later in England.
