James D. Rozier and Mary Ann WINN
In message 2165 on the Winn Family Genealogy Forum I listed the evidence that James D. Rozier of McIntosh County, GA married Mary Ann WINN in 1843 (they are gg grandparents of mine). This is consistent with Rozier family oral history, but contradicted by other (fairly weak) evidence. In response to that message I received information that the Mary Winn who was the oldest daughter of Joseph Jones Winn (who lived in McIntosh, Ware, and Pierce Counties) could not be Mary Ann WINN Rozier (thanks, Judy!), since that daughter had married James THOMAS. Indeed, in his 1869 will probated in 1873, Joseph J. Winn left $5 to his daughter Mary THOMAS.
I recently had the FamilyFinder test performed on my DNA at FTDNA. The top 5 matches were through my paternal grandmother, whose mother was a Rozier from McIntosh County, GA. The top match was a 3rd cousin via the Harrelsons of Marion County, SC, followed by two Rozier cousins from GA: Franklin and Aaron. The next two matches were through descendants of Joseph J. Winn (thank, Wanelle!). This is a rather strong confirmation of Rozier family oral history. There were a number of (likely related) Winn families in nearby Liberty County, GA, and it is possible that Mary Ann WINN Rozier was a niece of Joseph J. Winn. This would account for Mary Ann's son Jordan Rozier working on the farm of elderly Joseph J. Winn in 1870.
Given that McIntosh is a burned county and is missing early marriage records, this DNA match may be the strongest direct evidence of that marriage.
