My pateranl gfather was Hans Larson Ruei b 11 Nov 1840 in Numendal, Buskerud Co., Norway. He, with brother, Andrew, came to America via Quebec, Canada in 1859. They eventually settled in Clermont, Fayette Co., IA. Both brothers signed up to serve in Co. F Infantry in the Civil War. Soon Andrew was transferred to another unit and family oral history says he died at Vicksburg, MO. My gf Hans Larson served all 4 years of the Civil War. He was injured in Goldsboro, NC; he served under General Sherman. He was sent to Camp David Hospital. After he was released from the hospital,he returned to IA. He was married to Harriett Bergit (Kittilson) Gallak in Dec. 1876. They lived in Valley Twp., Fayette Co.,IA. 3 dau were b here; 1 died. In 1883 Hans bought land in Dakota Territory (now South Dakota), built a sod house, then sent for his family. Altogether 13 c were born; 10 lived. Some of the older children had said their gf's name was Lars Ruei (spelled the old way with the added i on the end)and his wife was named Hilda ?Two sisters also came to America. Got married in IA; moved into WI and became "lost" family members. I have seen photos of these sisters. All of the Rues living in IA are from the Telemark, Norway area. I can find no connection with them. All of Hans & Bergit's family records burned in a house fire after 1912 in Valley Twp.,Hyde Co.,Holabird, SD.
I have looked at the old church records here in America, but found no information. The Quebec boat records are non-existent prior to the Civil War. Hans Larson was naturalized, but where? If anyone has information about my family members, please email email@example.com
